Question

1. What would happen if crossing over after synapsis and random assortment of genes during metaphase no longer occurred during meiosis? In your answer make sure to describe these processes.

2. In Italy many years ago (late 1800s) male children that had a beautiful singing voice were castrated (testicles were removed) prior to puberty so they would maintain their lovely voice. What would happen to the levels of GnRH, FSH, LH and testosterone in the blood in these boys? What effect would these hormonal changes have on sexual characteristics and behavior? Explain your answer.

3. Sam and Sally are both taking the course Human Sexually. During this course, the professor states that sexually transmitted (venereal) diseases (STDs) due to microorganisms, such as gonorrhea, can sometimes cause peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum) in females. This is a serious condition that can lead to sterility and even death. However, males never get peritonitis due to a sexually transmitted disease. Explain why.

4. Janey & Jill, who obviously have not taken A&P, wanted to make a douche (a solution used to remove sperm cells following intercourse). Janey suggests using a vinegar solution (pH ~2.4). Jill wants to use a solution of baking soda (pH ~8.2). Although neither solution promises to be very effective, which solution would be more likely to succeed in preventing a pregnancy? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

1. Crossing over and random assortment of genes results in more genetic variations. If these don’t occur, it results in less genetic variations. Random assortment is the process in which individual chromosomes line up randomly, resulting in a variety of possible genetic combinations in gametes.

2. Castrations results in increased levels of gnrh, fsh and lh but low levels of testosterone. Due to low levels of testosterone, sex drive diminishes.

3. In females vaginal surface area is more compared to males and is exposed outside during intercourse. Therefore peritonitis occurs in females but not males.

4. Though both are not effective, vinegar helps in preventing pregnancy.
