Question

Gallbladders can collect gallstones which are precipitates of cholesterol that are secreted by the liver. Sometime the gallstone can leave the gallbladder and get stuck in the cystic duct, thereby blocking the release of bile. Sometimes the gallstone moves further along the duct and blocks the pancreatic duct (and the common bile duct i.e.) How would these two different condition present themselves as related to their effects on digestion. Be sure to explain which processes would be inhibited, unaffected or just slightly hindered and why.

Explanation / Answer

Answer

The pancreas is the exocrine and endocrine gland. It produces different enzymes for digestion. The enzymes are trypsin and chymotrypsin for protein digestion; amylase for carbohydrates digestion and lipase for the breakdown of fats.when the stomach food, the pancreatic juice moves to pancreatic duct. It is connected with the common bile duct and form ampulla of Vater enters into a first part of the small intestine called duodenum. The blockage of this duct leads hindered digestion of food substances.

Bile is the fluid contains water, organic molecules and electrolytes and bile acids that flows into the small intestine through biliary tract. Bile is essential for digestion and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine.

Bile acids are produced from hepatocyte and synthesized from Cholesterol. It is actively secreted into canaliculi. It is amphipathic (both hydrophilic and hydrophobic natures) bile is essential for digestion and absorption of fatty substances. It provides digestion by

- Emulsification of lipid aggregates.

- Solubilization and transport of lipids in an aqueous conditions

Blockage of this ducts leads to decreased digestion fat substances.

So the pancreatic fluids or juices and the bile is essential for digestion of food
