Above is a CT scan of a normal brain (left) and Terry Schiavo's brain (from 2002 at right). Terry Schiavo suffered a heart attack in 1990 and was kept alive in a comatose state for 15 years. In her brain scan the loss of brain tissue is evident and the black area is liquid and the small white piece in the right image is the thalamic stimulator implanted in her brain. Based on what you know about functions of different parts of the brain discuss which regions of the Schiavo's brain remained intact and functional as her main medical support was only a feeding tube.

By deeply seeing the case it probably the pons consisting of nuclei that transfers signals from the forebrain to the cerebellum,and simultaneosly controls sleep, respiration and posture. This probably kept her alive in a comatose state for 15 years.
