2) Discuss if your employer (or previous employer) had rules regarding the usage of smartphones in meetings or in the workplace. What if any restrictions/limitations did you have? If your company does not have a policy, what type of policy would you suggest for an organization regarding the use of smartphones in the workplace?

BUSINESS ETHICS

Explanation / Answer

Smartphones present a unique challenge to the employers. On one hand, it is necessary to have one, as it both necessary for the business and the cooperation of the workforce and on the other hand it causes ethical issues like a slacking workforce which does not work as much as they are supposed it. Leaking of private information to competition, which means that while smartphones are necessary they could be a threat to security. Also, the company can monitor the private information of the employee by deploying software on their network essentially tracking their usage and the final issue being that people use the company's resources like their network on their time, which is supposed to not be the case.

My previous place of employment had strict rules regarding cell phone use in the office. It was prohibited unless it was absolutely necessary and in cases of emergency. It was allowed in special cases where a part of the meeting requires you to use the phone as a demonstration.

For an organization that does not have such regulations, they need one. It holds not be as extreme as prohibiting the use of it rather restricting the use of private time and utilizing the company's resource as their own. While, in netting it is generally good etiquette to leave your phone on silent, switch it off and therefore the problem is minimized on its own.
