Question
A male patient was admitted to the hospital their lab results came back which made you feel uneasy. The results indicated that the patient had the flowing high levels of antibodies: Maternal IgG, Maternal IgM and Maternal IgA. You asked for the labs to be redone and the new results showed the following: high levels of Maternal IgG and Maternal IgA and high levels of IgM. Why you did you reject the first set of results, explain your answer. What can tell from the results as far as the age of the patient, explain your answer. What could you tell from the results as far as what is wrong with the patient? What other steps would you take to find what type of disease the patient has? (microbiology)
Explanation / Answer
1). In general, the increased levels of IL-6 (interleukin 6) are associated with increased antibody levels of IgA and IgG (immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin G). The serum immunoglobulin levels also increase during some of the metabolic syndromes. The results were rejected because they were not generally found in a normal male. So, the reproducibility of the results need to be checked.
The patient’s higher immunoglobulin levels might be because of an infectious condition or any disease that led to the occurrence of infectious disease. These findings does not indicate the patient’s age.
The possible diagnoses of the patient include, multiple myeloma, metabolic disease, or polyclonal gammopathy.
Other tests needed to confirm the diagnoses include, incomplete blood test, enzyme tests, and tests to determine the elements. Radiological scans must be considered whenever necessary.
