Question

4. You are given a culture of bacteria on a nutrient agar plate. You determine that it grows optimally at 37° C and forms small white colonies. You look at some of these organisms under a microscope and see gram-negative rod-shaped cells. When oxygen is present, it uses aerobic respiration of glucose to grow, but in an oxygen-lacking environment it readily uses anaerobic fermentation of glucose. Because you didn't listen to your microbiology professor, you are not wearing gloves and are careless. You accidentally drop the petri plate containing your organism and it leaves a wet spot on your pants. You, foolishly, wipe away the wet spot with your hand, giving it r thought. After writing some notes in your lab notebook, you feel a piece of the salad from lunch stuck between your teeth. You pick it out with your finger (the same e you used to touch the colony), Of course, being the careless person you are, you have not washed your hands. About a day later you are at work again and start to feel some discomfort in your intestinal area. You feel a bit feverish and have felt "generally crappy" all day. You suddenly feel your stomach clench and it feels as though it is tied in knots! You rush to the bathroom and vomit out everything you ate that day. Afterwards, you pull yourself together and get back to work. Everything is going fine until you have a sudden and intense NEED to use the bathroom. You have the most powerful and uncomfortable episode of diarrhea EVER. You wonder if your body is trying to turn itself inside-out! Your fever is noticeable and you measure it to be 101.8 F. You decide it is best to go home but are afraid you "won't make it home" unless your car is equipped witha restroom The moral? WEAR GLOVES WHEN WORKING WITH MICROBES AND WASH YOUR HANDS!! (especially if you think you got some organisms on them) Which type of energy generation strategy does this organism use? Which class do you think this organism is part of? Can you guess the genus?

Explanation / Answer

Energy generation strategy:

This organism generates energy by breaking down glucose . It breaks glucose using following pathway:

1. Glycolysis. ( Converts Glucose to Pyruvate)

2. Tca cycle. ( Oxidation of Acetyl coA to co2)

3. Pentose Phosphate Pathway ( Oxidation of Glucose to Co2)

4. Converts pyruvate to ATP by fermentation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Class - Gammaproteobacteria.

Genus - Escherichia.
