Question
For each of the following possible causes of Polycythemia Vera, explain why each would result in an abnormally high concentration of RBC’s1. Living at high altitude 2. EPO secreting hormone 3. Decreases plasma volume For each of the following possible causes of Polycythemia Vera, explain why each would result in an abnormally high concentration of RBC’s
1. Living at high altitude 2. EPO secreting hormone 3. Decreases plasma volume
1. Living at high altitude 2. EPO secreting hormone 3. Decreases plasma volume
Explanation / Answer
Because at high altitude the oxygen concentration is low and therefore our body becomes hypoxic. so to meet the need of our body’s oxygen the number of RBC’s are increased at high altitude.
At the time of hypoxia our body do not get enough oxygen therefor to meet the need of oxygen the kidney secretes the erythropoietin hormone which stimulate the synthesis of erythrocyte.
During stress or during exercise there will be decrease in plasma volume is presumably due to an increased intra-capillary pressure in the contracting muscles. because to meet the oxygen demand of our body the plasma volume decreases and the erythrocyte concentration increases. Decrease in plasma volume without the change in red blood cell mass of absolute polycythemia, so that the erythrocytes become more concentrated.
