8. Intercalated discs can be defined as the transverse bands which acts to separate the ends of the cardiac muscle fibres that lie adjacent to each other. They are responsible for connecting cardiomyocytes i.e individual heart cells. They provide sites of strong adhesion to hold the adjacent cells together. The gap junctions in the intercalated discs provide sites of diffusion of ions between cells and allow depolarization waves to pass from heart to all cells of the body.
