Question

Two tubes have been immersed in equal volume of water for about one hour. Both tubes are sealed with dialysis membrane at one end which is permeable only to water. Tube A contains 1.0 M Sucrose and Tube B contains 0.5 M Sucrose.

a. Which tube will contained less water over time?

b. Why

Question #2

After the blood is added, what is the expected osmolarity and tonicity of the solution containing both 0.1M NaCl and 0.1M Urea, respectively?

a. isoosmotic, hypotonic

b. isoosmotic, isotonic

c. hypoosmotic, hypotonic

d. hyperosmotic, hypertonic

e. hyperosmotic, hypotonic

f. none of the above

Explanation / Answer

a. The answer is Tube B will contains less water over the time.

b.
The process of movement of solvent molecules from lower concentration to higher concentration through a semipermable membrane is called osmosis. This osmolysis occurs untill it gets the isotonic level. As the tube A contain more concentrated solution, it needs more solvent to bring down to isotonic level when compared to the tube B.

So, at the isotonic level Tube A contains more amount of water when compared to the Tube B becuase of 1M concentration and Tube B contains less amount of water when compared to tube A because of 0.5 M concentration.
