Question
The graph below was constructed using the class data that was collected during the Urination Lab. Based on the data in the graph, when comparing the Gatorade group to the Water (control) group, what is the best explanation of what occurred? Urine Specific Gravity Vs. Time 1040 1.035 1030 1.025 ? 1020 1.015 1.010 ?1.005 1000 Water Ice Tea Cranberry Gatorade 30 60 90 120 Time (min) a. The urine specific gravity of the Water group became smaller over time. This was unexpected since the students in this group had ingested a large volume of pure water. because the students in the Water group drank twice the volume of water (normalized for weight) as the Gatorade group. Gatorade both have a neutral pH of 7.0. of water (normalized for weight). unexpected since the Gatorade group should have had a higher urine specific gravity. O b. Although Gatorade has a higher osmolarity than does water, the urine specific gravity of the Water and Gatorade groups was nearly identical c. The graph shows the urine specific gravity of the Gatorade and Water groups as nearly identical, which was expected since water and ? d. The urine flow rate of both the Water and Gatorade groups were nearly identical. This is expected since both groups drank the same volume e. Although Gatorade has a greater osmolarity than does water, the urine specific gravity of each group was nearly identical. This wasExplanation / Answer
Gatorade has lowest urine specific gravity and so it should have lowest uurine flow rate. Initially their plasma osmolarity and blood pressure are high, changes in osmolarity cause release of ADH hormone and increase in water reabsorption by aquaporins. With in increase in aquaporins gatorade starts to act as water, an increase in blood pressure and volume and decrease in plasma osmolarity and resulted into nearly identical urine specific gravity with water group by time. The answer is d.
