1. In most cases, women are the most affected by abusive relationships, but a very small percentage of women leave these relationships. The main factors for this behaviour could be
(a) Women consider themselves weak in the presence of their abusive male counterpart. They believe that physically they are weaker and they just don't think they can leave that relationship because men could hurt them physically.
(b) Lack of confidence and self-esteem may lead women in abusive relationships to feel that they do not deserve a healthy relationship and they feel that they cannot get out of it.
(c) Society and Peers plays a major role. Women tend to think more what others would talk or think about them so they tend to think that they are better off staying in the relationship.
(d) In most cases women feel that with time things would change. Everyday there is some hope that this would stop and their life would change for the better.
(e) Temporary change in the behaviour of men may be another cause.
2.
Men don't leave relationships that are supposedly so unsatisfactory to them because their ego comes in the way. They know that they are physically stronger than women so they feel they can take advantage of women as long as possible.
Some men with cruel intentions actually like to hurt and abuse women so there is no chance that they would leave them. These sadists find pleasure out of hurting women.
3.
The cycle of domestic violence has the potential to destroy the lives of children. Mentally these children may be scarred for life as they won't be able to forget such incidents.
Some of these children actually turn out to be criminals later because they cannot forget what has happened in front of their eyes and these memories build up rage in them.
Some children may show extreme levels of fear. There have been incidents where children have stopped talking in fear.
These children should meet a child psychiatrist otherwise the long-term effects could be dangerous.
4.
Firstly if someone is being abused in a relationship then you should learn to say NO. This is your most powerful weapon in an abusive relationship.
For those who have been affected it's utmost important to consult a Psychiatrist. This is because they understand your situation and they can help you regain your self-confidence and self-esteem.
If we have a friend who has been part of an abusive relationship then the best thing we can do is to make him/her love themselves again. It's possible that they curse themselves for being part of that relationship but it was not their fault in the first place.
People with a history of abusive relationships require love and care above everything else. Love them, take care of them and help them become independent.
