Multiple sclerosis is the condition that damages myeline sheath covering the neurons. This damage disrupts the communication between neurons as nerve impulse is not conducted properly. Thus, multiple sclerosis is known as demyelinating disease.
- It results in uncoordinated movements, pain sensation, and vision loss.
1) Effect of multiple sclerosis on nervous system.
The neurons in brain have myeline sheath which helps in rapid conduction of nerve impulses as well as forms whte matter in the brain.
When immune cells of the body reaches the brain. they attack proteins on myeline sheath as immune cells mistakenly recoznized myeline as foreign particle.
Immune cells releases cytokinins, that activate antibody production against the myeline sheath.
As a result of this, there is destruction of myeline sheath. Lesions can be seen at the place of white matter due to this degradatiion.
This causes a great damage to nervous system and inhibits normal impulse conduction process.
Main effects seen in nervous system are :
Other such symptoms are muscle rigidity, fatigue, reduced sensory perceptions, vision loss and slurred speech.
2) Treatment of multiple sclerosis
All these treatments provide symptomatic relief.
3) Prevention of multiple sclerosis
There are certain factors believed to be contributing to development of multiple sclerosis.
Preventing these factors is helpful.
