Explanation / Answer

Q.How do coronary artery disease develop in the body?

Ans. Coronary artery disease develop due to formation of an atheroma in the artery. Atheroma is like bulging of the artery wall because of accumulation of fatty acids, macrophages, neutrophils and overgrowth of collegin, smooth muscles within the wall of the artery.

This can lead to partial blocking of artery or complete blocking of artery which results in deprivation of oxygen and other nutrients to the area it supplies. This finally results in ischemia of the area causing Angina Pectoralis or Myocardial Infarction.

Citrate smoking accelerates this process.

Q. The ways to prevent the onset of the disease?

Ans. 1. Cigarette smoking should be avoided.

2. Fatty diet like packet stuff should be avoided.

3. Regular exercise should be included in schedule.

Q. What treatment option exist if steps to prevent the disease fail?

Ans. 1. In emergency condition of severe chest pain, the patient should be given glyceryl nitrate sublingually or oral aspirin immediately.

2. For regular course of treatment, the patient is administered:

-Calcium Channel Blockers like amlodipine or diltiazem.

- Nitrates like Isosorbide Mononitrate

- Anti-platelet agent like Aspirin.

In severe conditions, the patient should be rushed to hospital and ECG needs to be done immediately. If the patient has an ECG indicating myocardial infarction, Stent angioplasty or Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty(PTA) is the treatment of choice.

In Stent angioplasty, to insert a pipe in patient's vein of arm which has a stent attached to it at the end. We reach the area of block and open the stent which open the path for blood flow in the artery.

In PTA, a lower extremity graft of artery is taken out and an anastomosis is made i.e giving the blood another way to go to the ischaemic area overlooking the atheromatous artery.
