Question
For each of the designs below indicate what kind of design was used: Between-subjects, Within-subjects, or Mixed.
Example 1:
A researcher is interested in whether the likeability of a person is influenced by their job. All participants are given a description of a person and their job. The description of the job varied: either a salesperson or a grade school teacher. Half of the participants viewed the description of the salesperson first then the grade school teacher, while the other half viewed the description of the grade school teacher first then the salesperson. After each description the participants were asked to rate how much they liked the person. The researcher found that the participants liked the grade school teacher more than the salesperson.
Example 2:
A researcher is interested in the effectiveness of a new drug on students’ ability to concentrate. The researcher randomly assigns 25 participants to a placebo, 25 participants to a ½ dose, 25 participants to a full dose, and 25 participants to a dose and a half. Two weeks later she gives all participants two different tests: a test with unsolvable anagrams and a test with solvable anagrams. The researcher found that the participants who received 1 dose of the new drug reported significantly higher concentration abilities on both the solvable and unsolvable anagrams than participants in any of the other conditions.
Explanation / Answer
1. The first example is Within-subjects design.
