Question

3014NSC Advanced Phvsiologv ASSIGNMENT 1 avl 25.0 mm/s 10.0 mm/m MAC55 Mr Costanzo is a 69 year old male who has a history of myocardial infarction three years ago. He has been feeling increasingly dizzy and today he fainted at home, at which point his wife phoned for an ambulance. Upon presentation at the emergency department a 12 lead ECG was recorded, which is seen above. The ECG was noted to have an abnormal PR interval with occasional P waves that were not followed by QRS complexes. His blood pressure was described as hypotensive. Answer the following questions with regards to this patient case

Explanation / Answer

The patient Mr. Costanzo shows the signs of Bradycardia, with hypotension, heart beat rate less than 50 beats per minute. Atropine is an anticholinergic drug. It is parasympatholytic agent, that acts by blocking cholinergic stimulation of the muscarinic receptors of the heart. This would increase the heart beat rate and increase the blood pressure to normal. Hence, Atropine is indicated in the treatment of Bardycardia by the doctor in this case.
