Question

Some people argue that the gender pay gap (i.e. men, on average, making more money than women) is not due to gender biases or unfair treatment. Rather, it is because many capable women, when they are in their 30s, often work less or quit their jobs in order to take care of their children rather than work long hours and continue to develop their career. Based on her article “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All?”, do you think that Marie-Anne Slaughter would agree with the above statement? Do you think she would agree that the gender pay gap is caused by women’s “preference to stay home”?

Explanation / Answer

Women were always treated like a second class citizen for ages and the trend continues still today. They were considered as physically and emotionally weak thus men kept them at home without allowing them to work outside the home. They were used only for sexual pleasures, rearing children, doing household chores etc. Today, even when women has entered the workspace and proved that they could do all the jobs that men do, they are overlooked in terms of equal pay and promotions to top jobs. Men say the same excuses which they were saying for years.

Marie-Anne Slaughter disagrees the points of men for not considering women for equal pay and promotion to top jobs. She argues that what women do at home should be treated on par with what men do outside the home. She says that people who don’t spend time with their kids and families are going to remain non-productive employees as one’s personal issues would prevent them from working. She points out that women are categorically avoided for top posts by questioning the number of top notch jobs women hold. She says that only organizations that treated men and women equally have grown and flourished. Finally, she argues that although women outnumber men in the workplace, they are still not treated and paid equally.
