Question

Suppose your manager presents you with the following information about machines that could be used for a job, and wants your recommendation on which one to choose. The specification width is .48 mm. In this instance, you can narrow the set of choices, but you probably wouldn't make a recommendation without an additional piece of information. (Round your answers to 3 decimal places.) Cost per Standard Deviation (mm) 059 .060 063 .061 Machine Unit ($) 20 12 10 Proces5 We can narrow the choices to processes (Click to select) v

Explanation / Answer

Cp = Specification widhth / 6* Standard deviation

Cp Machine A = 0.48 / 6*0.059 = 1.355

Cp Machine B = 0.48 / 6*0.06- = 1.333

Cp Machine C = 0.48 / 6*0.063 = 1.269

Cp Machine D = 0.48 / 6*0.061 = 1.311

Machine A and B have Cp greater or equal to 1.33 and hence most capable to meet specification. The cost of Machine B is 60% of machine A and considering quite a low cost, we can narrow our choice to Machine B.
