Question

Chapter 1, Supervision Fundamentals, discusses the transition from a line employee to a supervisory role (please read before you post!). While this may seem simple (and desirable) to many workers, the realities of this change can be difficult and sometimes dramatic. Describe a time when you or one of your peers made the move to a supervisory position and what you observed and experienced during the transition (if you have not experienced this, you can comment on the experience and observations of someone you know). Was it difficult to adjust to the new role? Was it worth it? How did you and/or others react to the change? What might have made the change smoother for all parties?

Explanation / Answer

One of my colleagues moved to the role of site in charge in the last year. When he made the transition I observed that my colleague has become less flexible while dealing with the team members. He was a very friendly and open minded person. But when he was given the responsibilities of the team suddenly, he was affected by stress and was not certain about what should be done to handle the team effectively which affected his decision making skills. He could not exert his control over the team members as he was afraid of losing his relationship with the team members. He was very good in his work but seemed to be uncomfortable in the role of supervisor. We know that he is worth to be the supervisor according to his skills and his ability to maintain good relationship with the team members. But we were not able to accept his control over us as a supervisor and many of us did not obey him. This attitude of the team members made the situation worse as he also could not warn us strongly in case of pitfalls because of the friendship between us. I think training on the supervisor skills would have made the transition easier for him so that he can behave more likely as a supervisor. When he starts behaving a real supervisor avoiding the bias that may come out of his relationship with the team members, the members also would accept his leadership. He is a good supervisor but lack of training and guidance put him under uncertainty and tension. The training may help him to improve his communication and decision making skills which are very important for a supervisor. He would become flexible in his role if he understands the role better and might have faced situations with more confidence. All the parties would understand their position and behave accordingly when the leader is confident in his actions.
