Question
Six months later, First
National Bank has successfully consolidated the networks at its original location and at its new acquisition. One day, the bank%u2019s loan officer calls you for help on an urgent problem. He cannot connect to a loan provider%u2019s Web site. When he tries connecting
to the site, called www.loansandmoreloans. com, the message he receives is %u201CAlert! www.loansandmoreloans.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again.%u201D He assumes that the loan provider%u2019s network is down, but he wants to make sure the problem
isn%u2019t something he could fix, because he urgently needs to access the site. As you know, other things could be causing this error message. Given what you have learned about TCP/IP networking, suggest two other reasons why this error message might appear in
the loan officer%u2019s browser window. Then describe two specific commands the loan officer could type at his computer%u2019s command prompt that would help you and him narrow down where the connection is failing. Which of these two commands would you try first and
why?
Explanation / Answer
There are of course two ways to do this. Get ICANN public addresses for all machines. Now that all the machines are connected to the public network. One should worry about security. Setup one firewall machine, and tunnel all traffic thru this firewall. Block un-needed ports/protocols.
OR
Use NAT (network address translation) to connect the internal network to the public network. The internal machines continue to use the internal addresses, outbound and inbound traffic are routed thru the NAT server. This way, the internal addresses are not known to the outside, minimizing the risk of security problems. I would still use a fire-wall.
In either case, lock down the fire-wall, NAT server and allow as little access as posible.
As far as recommendation, I would have to go with NAT solution. Save money, and increase security.
