Explanation / Answer
Generalization refers to the coming up with the broader conclusions that is not specific and covers the whole group or organization. Here, the statement is given with a view to cover everyone, rather getting specific to a particular person or group of person with specific data. For example, a statement that US elections are rigged and influenced by a foreign government, is a general statement that is not backed by the right set of data or proof. Here, the statement is based upon the news as well as the rumors spread in the media. In the organizational context, senior management can say that employees are not doing a good job and organization is suffering. But, it is a general statement as anybody can go with the right set of data, proof of meeting the benchmark standards and fulfilling all the criteria expected from him to challenge the general statement. So, generalization covers poor performers as well as good performers and it is the drawback of a general statement.
I have personally faced the scenario of general statement when a manager says that sales function has not achieved the targets assigned to them and such statements generally come at the time of performance appraisal. This general statement is countered by myself with the data of business development numbers, meeting the targets and subsequent confirmation mail from the senior management and positive feedback from the clients. It brings contradiction and my claims about my work and my team’s performance is vindicated. Here, it is the generalization that is going to rob the achievements my team has delivered to the organization. Hence, the generalization has negative effects.
