Social Exchange Theory basically defines the relationship between the people in terms of getting cost benefits.

In the first case, Sheldon has used the basic concept of Social exchange theory where he wants to give a Christmas gift related to the cost of the gift. So that’s why he has got a lot of gifts to present a related gift in that lot to the penny. The cost of benefit in this video clearly depicts that both Sheldon and Penny wants to create a good relationship in terms of friendship. In the initial stage as Sheldon has thought of just keep going with that good relationship. But, later at the end of the video, he came to know that how Penny is valuable that she has got a Gift that he likes at most. And he is not able to gift the right one as the gift that Sheldon costs more than what he bought for Penny.

This Social Exchange Theory of Gift changing predicts that one cannot predict what he gets as a gift for him, whether it would be a gift of close to heart, it would be a gift of not liking or depreciating the values of persons as well. But, here, in this video, the future relationship between Penny and Sheldon is unpredictable that they will give full cooperation between each other as Sheldon has got a good gift and Penny has got a Friendship Hug from Sheldon which is unpredictable as far as Sheldon’s behavior is concerned.
