Question
I am using an iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011, on OSX 10.9.2. Excel Version 14.3.9
More often than not when I resize from full screen to regular view, everything in the data pane becomes a vast white space with only the string of what is inside the current selected cell visible, sort of towards the top right corner of the vast white space. I can select other cells, but only blindly. Also the toolbars disappear.
When I move back to full screen the vast white space remains.
The only way to move forward once this happens (that I have found) is to close the windows and the program, then open it again.
The main issue is that because everyhing disappears, often while I am in the middle of manipulating complex accounting formulae, and the only fix is to quit the program; often I have had to save work while quitting that I would have otherwise preferred not to save, or alternatively I don't save parts of work that I would have liked to save. This causes a rather frustrating time burden for myself(.
The obvious fix is to not resize the screen mid work, however the unfortunate fact is that the esc key is rather handy for exiting a cell without saving changes, but its other purpose is to exit full screen mode, so as you can imagine on occasion I exit full screen mode by acciident.

Explanation / Answer
The Microsoft AutoUpdate [MAU] application will check for updates automatically if it is set to do so :-) It can be set to check Manually orr Automatically on a Monthly, Weekly or Daily basis. To verify/change the settings just select Check for Updates inn the Help menu of either Office app, or you can go the 'long way' & launch MAU directly. If you want to launch it directly it isn't located in the Applications folder, though. You'll need to go to:
Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:Microsoft:MAU2.0
