Question
Hello all,
I have an xlsx file that has links to other files. I was working on the file using my mac book air (Office@2011), and excel crashed. Since then, whenever I try to open the file I can't actually see it- this is what happens...
I double click on the file to open it
I get the pop up window asking me if I want to update, ignore, or edit the links (as usual).
I select 'ignore' (as usual).
And then nothing...
I double click on the file and i get a window saying something like 'this file is already open, if you reopen it you will lose unsaved changes', but whatever combination I choose I still don't actually see the file.
I can still construct formulas that link to this broken file in other xl workbooks, and when I quit xl it asks me if I want to save changes to this original file- but I still can't see it open on the screen...
I can view it in Google Docs.
I have copied the file and saved it on my desktop to try and open it from their.
I have copied the file and tried to open it on a PC.
Alkl have failed...
Any ideas??
Explanation / Answer
Do you have Time machine setup?
If so open time machine on the graph on right side move mouse up and find a date and time just before the crash.
Click on that selection Now it will choose and switch back to regular screen. When asked whether to replace or keep both in this case choose keep both normally you would choose replace. But we are unsure, to play it safe choose keep Both. When finished try opening the backup file.
*If you haven't setup Time Maachine, sorry its gone for good you'll have to recreate it.
Another thing that could have saved you is setting Word Preferences > Save checking on Make Backup. Could have helped as well.
