Question

I recently purchased and installed Office for Mac 2011 on my MacBook Pro, running OSX Mavericks. The install went smoothly and the activation key worked just fine. Right when I installed the programs, I was prompted to install the updates for the programs so I did and now they are running version 14.4.4. Now that everything is installed, however, I cannot open the applications to begin documents, presentations, etc. I click on the application to open it, it loads to about 40% then stops abruptly to give me a message saying "Microsoft Excel (for example) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It then asks if I wish to send a report to Microsoft. When I do, and the program opens back up, the Error Report comes right back and continues in a never-ending cycle. In more detail, the error report reads:

Microsoft Error Reporting log version##: 2.0

I'm confused by the 'unknown' portion of the report... Is it because I updated? Can these programs not run on Mavericks? I am so confused and cannot seem to find help anywhere.

Explanation / Answer

When all applications are affected then you have something occurring with your Mac system itself. I suspect you may have a cache or font issue causing the problem.

Restart you Mac with the Shift key held down. This should boot your system into Safe Mode. You
