Question
In regards to 2011 Excell .xls for Mac 10.9.2 Intell needing to share files with a 2003 Excell PC user. No go, it comes back to me as a .xlsm file one column wide. ITalked to a MS rep and he told me some features will work others won't so I bot 2004 Excell## 11.0 for Mac to use on my MacBookPro 10.5.8. My cohort with Excell 2003 could finally read and manipulate my file but when he emails his .xls file back it shows only a partial column wide and cannot view in any larger format. We are so close to accomplishing our interface but I can't do anything with his returned files on my MacBookPro#. Any help would be appreciated. Is there something like opening in another file? If so please elaborate. Thanks
Explanation / Answer
Re: "... it comes back to me as a .xlsm file". The .xlsm file type is a Macro-Enabled OOXML file type which Excel 2003 cannot create. Even if it contains macros it will be saved in the old .xls file format. It will generate a macro warning when opened by Excel 2004 or 2011 (provided that the Preference for the warning has not been disabled), but I don't know of any way that a file saved as .xls will magically be transformed to .xlsm, even when sent as an email attachment. We have no indication of what the file content is or the nature of what has been done by you or the other user. It's difficult to make responsible suggestions without complete & accurate details about each step of the process. Whether your installation of Office 2004 is fully updated -- You indicated that you installed 11.0 which is the base version. The final update was 11.6.6, so if the software isn't current it could explain the present problem... However, Excel 2011 [14.3.9] should be able to handle the file as well as or better than Excel 2004. There's no indication of whether you tried Jim's suggestion to share the file on a cloud as opposed to as an attachmentt. That's the best approach, but if you must use email use a utility such ass StuffIt to Zip!/Stuff the file each time anyone sends to the other.
