At a local liberal arts college, Bob, the head of the school, employed Mary, a deliberate worker, well liked by her peers, but has been unable to grasp the new technology.

Mary had been moved around quite a bit in an effort to place her in a suitable position, however with stricter budgets, it seemed that perhaps Mary needed to be eliminated; her salary was an unnecessary drain on the school’s budget and her job responsibilities could be accomplished more successfully with new technology. Bob has a responsibility to the community, albeit, the school, however he could simply drag this on for another six years until Mary's retirement, helping the needs of an individual. He can’t do both; help the school’s budget and help Mary, whose life seems to be the school.

As a school head, Bob faces an ethical dilemma to either do best for the school by letting Mary go or be good to Mary and let her continue until retirement. Bob has to be true to his duties and obligations to the School and his duties of the job. His conduct should be true to his duties.

As suggested in case, Bob has taken considerable efforts in trying to fit Mary in a job at the school, however, there is no place for her as of today. As a next step, Bob has to talk to Mary and ask her to leave or take voluntary retirement. If allowed by business (School), Bob can pass on some benefits of retirement to Mary to ease her way forward.
