5. A service process has five steps. Every customer must go through Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Step 4 and Step 5. It takes 38.1 minutes to process a customer in Step 1, 18.3 minutes in Step 2, 17.3 minutes in Step 3, 35 minutes in Step 4, and 40.8 minutes in Step 5. The process operates 11.1 hours per day. Use at least 4 decimals in calculation and answer You must show your calculation steps on your spreadsheet What is the cycle time of the service process in minutes per customer? The cycle time is minutes per customer
Explanation / Answer
PLEASE FIND BELOW ANSWERS FOR QUESTION 1, 4 AND 5 :
Answer to question 1 :
The bottleneck step out of the 5 steps is the one which has maximum processing time . In the given case , the bottleneck step in this case is step 5 with processing time of 40.8 minutes. The cycle time of the overall service process is decided by the duration of the bottleneck step . Therefore cycle time is 40.8 minutes per customer
THE CYCLE TIME = 40.8 MINUTES PER CUSTOMER
Answer to question 4:
The bottleneck step will be the one which processes minimum number of customers per hour . In the given case, it is step 5 with processing capacity of 6.44 customers per hour . Therefore capacity of the whole service process is 6.44 customers per hour .
This in other words means = 60 minutes / 6.44 customers = 9.316 minutes per customer.
Therefore , cycle time is 9.316 minutes per customer
CYCLE TIME = 9.316 MINUTES PER CUSTOMER
Answer to question 5 :
The bottleneck step out of the process consisting of 5 steps is the Step 4 which takes maximum time of 30 minutes or0.5 hours . Since the cycle time of the process is determined by the cycle time of the bottleneck step, cycle time of the process is 30 minutes per customer.
Total available hours in 16 days = 16 x 8 = 128 hours
Therefore , number of customers the service process can serve in 16 days = 128/0.5 = 256
THE CYCLE TIME = 40.8 MINUTES PER CUSTOMER
