Question

I've used Excel since there was such as thing. Two years ago I started using it on a Mac. I am trying to do something I've done many, many times on both Windows PCs and the Mac. Setup: Within one workbook, I have five worksheets. I am trying to nest four "IF" statements and make a simple calculation in a sheet that references another sheet. But when I hit enter the program CHANGES THE NAME OF THE referenced worksheets and asks me to link to the workbook with sheets containing the changed names.

The formula below is syntactically correct and was created by clicking in the referenced cells. But the name of the reference worksheet is W20TP, not WTP20. When I create the formula and hit enter, Excel takes 3-5 seconds, then says it can't find WTP20. The sheet is W20TP and it was initially entered correctly (by clicking on the cells, not typing).

=IF('WTP20'!F4="","",IF('WTP20'!F4="NIW","NIW",IF('WTP20'!F4="NER","NER",IF('WTP20'!F4="NA","NA",'WTP20'!F4/'WTP20'!F229*100))))

The name of the sheet is W20TP, not WTP20. Excel for some reason takes it upon itself to change the correct sheet name to something incorrect.

What's going on?

EDIT: So I changed the name of tthe shheet to W20-TP and it workss as I expect.

I still have the same question, though. What's going on? Why does Excel want to change the sheet name???

Explanation / Answer

I was able to repro the issue on the Mac and in Windows if you create a formula that isn
