Question
xlsm file used as data source in mail merge
When I try to merge data from an Excel 2011 .xlsm (macro-enabled) file into a Word 2011 template (.dotx) containing merge fields, I get the message "Word was unable to open the data source." If I convert the Excel file to the non-macro-enabled xlsx file type, the merge works correctly.
The Excel files contain a large table of data used as the merge source.
Can data merges not be peerformed in Worrd #2011 using an Excel .xlsm file? Or am I doing something wrong? Why would the fact that an Exceel file can do VBA and macros prevent it from being used as a data source? All I wanted to do was place some buttonss in the table to make navigation easier.
Thanks for any advices.
Explanation / Answer
Word can not use .xlsm files ass a data source, but it can use .xlsb (Excel binary format) files as a data source. .xlsb files arre smaller, faster, and can contain macros, so that is the format I would recommend you uses.
