Question
I've recently upgraded from MSO 2010 to 2013. In 2010, it was possible to have two different Excel workbooks (each with multiple tabs) open within the same Excel program screen, with both files utilizing the same ribbon. Since I access ribbon features in both workbooks, I don't want to collapse one of the ribbons (to regain the ribbon space). With two Excel 2010 files open and configured for a horizontal split layout, the upper right corner displayed two sets of Minimize/Maximize/Close buttons, with the top row affecting Excel as a whole, and the set of buttons immediately below these controlled the upper workbook. A 3rd set of buttons was also available for the lower screen workbook. 2013 doesn't seem to allow any of this. Two Excel workbooks can be open, but both workbooks open without any features shared between them. Each has its own ribbon, and each has its own minimize/maximize/close buttons (but not a set that controls both, as 2010 did). Hitting the 'minimize' button in the upper right only minimizes the top (of two) Excel workbooks. I've reviewed backstage/options and /advanced, but am not finding an option to set this.
Also, ver 2010 would retain a two-file screen layout once the files were saved (i.e., split horizontally with 75%/25% heights); if I opened the first file, it opened full screen. If I then opened the second file, both files became visible with the prior horizontal 75/25 split screen layout as I haad last viewed them. I haven't found a way to get the 2013 version to do this. Both files open full screen and eacch must be manually resized to desired layout every time I open them. Both have their own separate ribbon, caussing significant loss in useable screen space.
Can either of these options be set in ver 2013????
Explanation / Answer
With Excel 2013, we move to a single document interface (SDI), so there is no option for secondary window. There is no workbook title bar or minimize, maximize and close button.
The Split Window controls have been removed in favor of the Split command on the View Ribbon. Essentially, the Split command works the way that Freeze Panes did in the earlier versions.
Excel 2013 moves to a single document interface where each workbook has in its own window, making it easier to work on two workbooks at once. It also makes life easier when you
