Question
Consider the below, which describes the main process steps at Widget Architects. Note: Assume the system is in steady state. All jobs must go through the receiving step. 50% then go through “Standard CAD jobs”, 25% go through “Complex CAD jobs” and the remaining jobs are rejected / declined.
1 Flow Analysis Problem
A. Calculate the flow time (in hours) for the “Receiving”, “Standard CAD” jobs, and “Deluxe CAD jobs” steps?
B. What is the average flow time through the entire system for: A job that is rejected after the receiving step? A standard CAD job?A complex CAD job?
C. Use Little’s Law to calculate the total flow time for the average job entering the system. Show that this answer is consistent with your answers to Question 2.
Work day 8 hours I- 12.32 Standard CAD Jobs 50% I 6.54 I1.67 2590 Complex CAD Jobs 100% , +| Receiving 0.5 jobs per hour R 2590 Rejected Customer declinesExplanation / Answer
1. As per Little’s Law, Flow Time (T) = I/R
Receiving jobs: R = 0.5 jobs/ hr
I= 1.67
So, T = I/R = 1.67/0.5 = 3.34 hr
Standard CAD jobs: R = 0.5 jobs/ hr * 0.5 = 0.25 jobs /hr
I= 12.32
So, T = I/R = 12.32/0.25 = 49.28 hr
Complex CAD jobs: R = 0.5 jobs/ hr * 0.25 = 0.125 jobs /hr
I= 6.54
So, T = I/R = 6.54/0.125 = 52.32 hr
