Question

Formatting specific cells via filter

I have a column of numbers that need a tad bit of formatting. Some are preceded by '. I want to get all of the numbers into a ###### format. I have tried filtering by ', then using a formula to remove the ' in a helper cell and copy back to the original source. However, the filter feature seems to mess this up. Any clues on how to do this? There are 20,000 cells, so I cannot do it by handd.

Explanation / Answer

First, use Edit> Replace to remove the colons... Type a colon in the Find What field, leave the Replace With field blank, then click Replace All.

Next, type the digit 1 into any unused cell then copy that cell. Select the range of values then go to Edit> Paste Special. Select Multiply in the Operations group then click OK.
