Question
Explain how did we obtain the the following (numbers) about memory?
1) The questions below are for a 8K x 32 memory unit.
(i) How many flip-flops are needed for the memory ddress register (MAR)
13
(ii) How many flip-flops are needed for the memory buffer register (MBR)?
32 bits
(i) How many words can a (word addressable) memory unit contain if the MAR has 15 bits (MDR same as above). Express your answer using the appropriate suffixes K or M etc?
215 = 210 - 25 = 32K
(iv) What if the memory is byte addressable?
32k / 4 = 8k
Explanation / Answer
1) The questions below are for a 8K x 32 memory unit.
(i) How many flip-flops are needed for the memory ddress register (MAR)
13
here total number of flip flop are 8k so that to represent that we need
2^13 flip flop so that 13 bit are required for flip flop
(ii) How many flip-flops are needed for the memory buffer register (MBR)?
32 bits
memory buffer register is used to store and transfer data from one to other
so here 8k x 32 memory unit, 8k is number of flip flop and 32 bits is the size of
memory buffer.
(iii) How many words can a (word addressable) memory unit contain if the MAR has
15 bits (MDR same as above). Express your answer using the appropriate
suffixes K or M etc?
215 = 210 - 25 = 32K
here 2^15 is the size of memory.
so that here 2^15 = 32k word
(iv) What if the memory is byte addressable?
32k / 4 = 8k
if memory is byte addressable than divide it bt 4 so that
byte addressable mode will be given.
