Question
The way in which we've integrated technology into our daily lives is a relatively recent phenomenon. I am not sure that we truly know the long-term impact of any chemicals at play. Just a few weeks ago, there were news articles about the World Health Organization putting cell phones in the same carcinogenic category as engine exhaust and some other common chemicals. The question remains do we really know the impact of these technologies that we sit in front of, hold in our hands, rest on our laps many hours each day?
Explanation / Answer
It is now well-known fact that the technological advances have made our life very easy but at the same time it has put our health at risk. With all this technological evolution we are exposed to new gadgets every day be it TV, Mobile Phones, Laptop, Tablets, VR Headsets, Smart Watches and so much more. This is not only affecting kids but also the adults who are spending much more time on bright screen with each passing day. There have been many studies which have shown the negative effects of all these technologies that we sit in front of for many hours :
1.) Not getting proper sleep: Studies have shown that looking at a bright screen like Smart Phones right before sleeping tend to have a negative effect as the person does not get proper sleep and the biological cycle of the body gets disturbed. Lack of proper sleep, in turn, have side effect on the body with people experiencing fatigue, weakness, and headache throughout the day.
2.) Increasing Waistlines: With so many hours of sitting and not getting proper exercise, our generation is fast moving towards obesity with numbers of obese people increasing each day. Obesity is the one the major factor for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
3.) Increasing eye strain: People are experiencing increased eye strain by sitting in front of laptop, desktop, phones etc for many hours. All this is leading to severe eye problems and the impact is more on kids with more and more kids becoming myopic these days.
4.) Chance of getting cancer is increasing with studies showing that around 49,000 cases of breast cancer and 43,000 cases of colon cancer in the U.S. could be linked to inactivity.
5.) Studies have also shown that we are becoming are less sensitive and less emotional and one of the reason is spending too much time alone on these bright screen devices. We are not talking to our peers, our neighbors and we are not bothered about problems at large affecting society and humankind.
