Question

Let the numbers in darkened circle be the activity number. Let the numbers on the lines be the duration in days. 1. Determine the earliest and latest start times and finish times, activity slack times, critical path and the time between the general's receipt of battle orders and the onset of battle. o AT&T; 8:04 PM moodle.selu.edu 3. In one of the little known battles of the Civil War, General Tecumseh Beauregard lost the Third Battle of Bull Run because his preparations were not complete when the enemy attacked. If the critical path had been available, the general could have plannod better. Suppose that the following project network with activity times in days had been available. Determine the earliest and the latest start and finish times, activity slack times, critical path, and the time between the general's reeeipt of battle orders and the onset of battle. Explanation / Answer

Determination of Critical Path
******************************
The sequance of critical activities in a network is called the critical path.
Is the longest path through the network.
Is the shortest project length.
No event on the path has slack time.

Find all Possible Paths
***********************
Find all possible paths through the diagram
1-2-4-7-9-10
1-2-3-6-9-10
1-2-5-6-8-9-10

Calculate Duration for Each Path
**********************************
1->2->4->7->9->10 ->2+2+4+2+1=11 minutes
1->2->3->6->9->10 ->2+5+3+1+1=12 minutes
1->2->5->6->8->9->10 ->2+4+3+3+0+1=13 minutes

Critical path is the shortest duration required to complete the project successfully.
In our project this is the third path: 1->2->5->6->8->9->10, which comes to 13 minutes.
Note that sum of durations of all activities on critical path comes 13 minutes,
and sum of duration of ALL activities on the project is much longer.

Earliest start
***************
The earliest start of each activity can be calculated using forward calculations in the project network and
is equal to the maximum of the earliest finishing times of all its predecessor activities.

Earliest finish
*****************
The earliest finish of an activity is defined as its earliest start time increased with its duration estimate.
The Earliest Finish Time of an activity = The Earliest Start Time of
the activity + The estimated duration to carry out that activity

Latest Start
************
Latest Start Time of an activity is the latest possible time of beginning that activity.
It is given by the formula Latest Start Time of an activity = The Latest Finish Time of the activity -
The estimated duration to carry out that activity.

Latest Finish
**************
Latest Finish Time of an activity is the latest possible time of completing that activity on the condition that
all the other activities succeeding it are carried out as per the plan of the management and without delaying
the project beyond the stipulated time.

Slack
*******
Slack, also known as float or total float represents the amount of time an activity can slip, or be delayed,
without impacting the overall project schedule.
It Can be calculated as Latest start. - Early start.
It Can also be calculated as Latest finish - Early finish.
