You have just been hired as a brand manager of toothpaste for a large consumer products company. Your job mainly involves encouraging the advertising and production groups to promote and manufacture your product more effectively. These departments aren’t under your direct authority, although company procedures indicate that they must complete certain tasks requested by brand managers. Describe the sources of power you can use to ensure that the advertising and production departments will help you make and sell toothpaste more effectively. [3 Marks]

Explanation / Answer

In order to ensure that the advertising and production departments will help you make and sell toothpaste more effectively, there are two sources of power which could help be avail the desired results in an amicable way without these Departments even realizing that I am using power to influence them:

·          Referent Power: I have been known in the Organization for being a democratic leader. I give opportunities to the people to speak up because that is one of ways to understand their issues in more constructive way and accordingly take the steps to deal with the same. I therefore attempt to use my charisma, as a Brand manager, to take the charge of the subordinates and stimulate them to become effective to the Organization overall. Accordingly, I am indeed looked up to by the employees working in other departments as well. I am in touch with the Production and Advertising departments on frequent basis so they know me well and hold me in high regards. I have never imposed my decisions or task over them but thanks to my nature itself and the kind of relationship I share with these Departmental heads, that these employees are in the view that helping me accomplish my task would help them create a favorable impression on the minds of their bosses as well due to the good word that I shall be spreading around in the Department. Accordingly, my personal connections and relationships with these Departments would give me the power to make and sell toothpaste more effectively.

·          Reward Power: Based on my personal relationships with the Departmental heads, there could be a better chance to let the employees who facilitate me with the advertising and production activities of the toothpaste, come in the good books of these bosses and thereby help them have a better appraisal in the Organization. Further, I could also assure these employees working in Production and Marketing department to get various other incentives linked with the success of the Toothpaste selling in the market. In this way, I could be able to influence the activities of these employees even though if I may not possess the authority over them. This reward power would motivate me and thereby help me avail the success through them.
