Baddeley and Hitch together developed a model on short term memory and named it as working memory. They stated that the original Multi Store Model for working memory was faulty, as it suggested that Short term memory is a unitary system and does not have any subsytems.Baddeley - Hitch model suggested that Working memory is not unitary. It has different subsytstems to deal with different types of information.
The model suggests that once any input is received through sensory memory, it is then transferred to Working memory which comprises of Central Executive, Visio Spatial Scratch pad and phonological loop.The Central Executive is the boss of the working memory as it controls the whole system and allocates data to two other subsystems respectively and also relates them to long term memory. It is also responsible for mental Maths and problem solving. It directs attention and dictates priority in particular situations.Although it is considered to be the most important part of working memory ,very little is known about it. It can also be seen as integratot of information from the two subsystems and from long term memory.
The Visio Spatial Sketchpad stores and processes information in visual or spatial format.It helps us in keeping track of ourselves with respect to objects so that we do not collide with each other.It also uses visual and spatial information which is stored in long term memory.The Phonological loop deals with spoken and written material.It consists of Phonological store which is the inner ear and linked to perceiving speech and holds information in speech format for hardly one or two seconds.The other part of phonological loop is Articulatory Control Process which is the inner voice and is linked to speech production.It rehearses information which is received from phonological store and keeps circulating information to retain them for long time.
