What is Remote Desktop?

As mentioned above, Remote Desktop is a client application on Windows that uses Remote Desktop Services as its underlying technology. Remote Desktop can be used to remotely login to another computer and access the desktop, data, applications and even control it remotely. However, Remote Desktop is not available on all versions of Windows. Some of the Windows versions that include Remote Desktop are Windows XP Professional, all three versions of Windows Vista and Windows NT Terminal server and all its later server versions. Remote Desktop in client versions of windows allows only one user to login at a time. But the server versions do not have this restriction.

Remote Desktop allows remote access to a machine without a user being present at the other end. Remote Desktop uses an account the pre-exists with a user name and password and is set up in the list of Remote Desktop users. When attempting a remote connection in this method, you will need to know the IP address or if on a local area network, you will need to know the computers name and password.

Remote Desktop only works between the following Windows Versions:

Windows XP Professional

Vista Business

Vista Ultimate

What is Remote Assistance?

As mentioned above, Remote Assistance is a client application on Windows that can be used by one user to assist another user remotely. In other words, Remote Assistance allows users to ask for help by giving others access to their own computer. Remote Assistance uses Windows Remote Desktop Services as its underlying technology. All versions of Windows include Remote Assistance. The user who wants assistance sends an invitation. Once the invitation is accepted by the other user, she will be manually granted permission to control the computer.

Remote Assistance allows remote access to a machine but in this method both users must be present. If Remote Assistance is needed on one end (usually for troubleshooting purposes), the user sends an invitation to connect via instant message or e-mail to a trusted person who can help. For security purposes, all sessions are encrypted and password protected.

Remote Assistance works for all XP and Vista versions.

What is the difference between Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance?

Although both Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance applications use the same underlying remote technology (Remote Desktop Services), they have quite different purposes. In simple terms, Remote Desktop allows a user to remotely control a desktop and applications of another computer over a network, while Remote Assistance allows users to ask for help by giving others access to their own computer. Remote Assistance requires an invitation from one user to initiate the remote connection, while Remote Desktop does not require an invitation. Remote Desktop only requires a username and a password (on the remote machine) to connect. When using Remote Assistance, the user who sends the invitation needs to manually grant permission for the other user. Therefore, the user who needs assistance should always be logged in on her system to get help through Remote Assistance. Both users see the same desktop in Remote Assistance, while only the owner sees the desktop and others see the welcome screen in Remote Desktop. You need Windows XP to offer help through Remote Assistance. However, you can use many versions of windows to connect to a system running Windows XP through Remote Desktop.

THE PROS AND CONS OF REMOTE DESKTOP:

One of the key benefits as already stated is the freedom and flexibility to work from your laptop or computer system from anywhere. With a remote desktop, support is also centralised and it cuts costs by decreasing the need for additional or multiple copies of the same business software.   This means that new software is rapidly deployed because you only have to install it once. There is no need for large teams of IT administration at each location. Using a remote server administrator also makes remote connection management more efficient.

And what happens when you hire new staff? The time and cost to set up and implement new PC’s is much greater than simply creating a remote ‘thin client’ which only depends on the server.

Disaster recovery is excellent with remote desktop as there is no fear of losing files or important data while using the service. All of your important data will be held in secure data centres whilst all connections to your remote desktop are encrypted to ensure your work is safe and secured from being hacked.

While this system can certainly streamline working practices, there are some disadvantages including downtime. When the network is down the entire system is inaccessible so it’s imperative that your system has a consistency of performance. The entire system will also work fine assuming the third party computers have strong and reliable internet connections.

Remote desktop can also struggle with highly graphic intensive users so if you have say 25 graphic designers in your business all wanting to work remotely, the requirement on a processing system can be so great that a dedicated PC is the only option. For any business, the remote desktop service should be powerful enough to monitor all connections.

With increased mobility, enhanced security, easier management, ease of upgrades and better performance it’s easy to why remote desktop solutions are the future and can make the difference in terms of the operational, strategic and fiscal set up of any business.
