Web 1.0 is creation of websites and allows people to view the websites. Web 1.0 is more of a commercialization of the websites and does not allow interactions with web surfers. The creation of Web 2.0, was the expansion of 1.0 where there was creation of websites that allowed for the interaction of web surfers. With the creation of the interaction, people are able to participate, share their experiences, and post their interactions in the form of discussions, blogs, social media, and customer satisfaction ratings. This expansion has allowed for additional expansion of the websites by allowing links that can be joined with the initial website. The creation of Web 2.0 surfers are allowed to research just about anything that someone else has deemed important enough to post comments about on a website. This allows surfers the ability to self-diagnose anything from car problems, medical problems, and good or bad customer experiences about a business. There are benefits and risks associated with online business. When a business decides to allow their shoppers the opportunity to shop online they are allowing themselves the opportunity to receive criticism and have a negative impact on their business or allowing themselves the opportunity to have great raves about their business, and receive great comments by their customers. By the use of social networking, customers have the opportunity to rate their experiences and interactions with companies and how employees reacted and engaged the customer. I have seen a business and owner accused of being racist because he terminated an employee who had a sweatshirt with a Native American Indian Headdress on the front of the shirt. This employee did not tell the whole truth on what had happened but instead decided to make themselves look innocent in the termination. When reading this on “facebook”, it was easy to see how a social networking website can be detrimental to a business. I can see how many people like to add drama to social networking websites! One benefit to social media for any company is the ability to reach many different shoppers and expand on their experiences whether good or bad. On the other hand, social network websites can enhance a company and their reputation by allowing customers to post their bad situations that were turned into good situations. Good customer experience and customer engagement should be a top priority when a business decided to develop online shopping.
