Question:

Each protocol discussed in the class has a place in the email implementation. Discuss, how and where each of them is used.

Answer:

There are three different protocols for sending and receiving emails which include SMTP, POP, and IMAP.

SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is used for sending a message from one mail server to another. An example of this is someone sending an email from yahoo server to a recipient on the gmai.l server.

POP: Post Office Protocol is used to transfer messages from the mail server to the mail client. POP basically downloads emails to your computer. An example is Outlook retrieving a message from the gmai.l server.

IMAP: Internet Message Access Protocol allows the web browser to read messages on the mail server. IMAP allows users to store their email on remote servers.

Explanation / Answer

Dear Student,

below are the answers...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is used for sending a message from one mail server to another. An example of this is someone sending an email from yahoo server to a recipient on the ---- server.

Ans..

Agree.

New Definition: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, a protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers. SMTP is generally used to send messages from a mail client to a mail server.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

POP: Post Office Protocol is used to transfer messages from the mail server to the mail client. POP basically downloads emails to your computer. An example is Outlook retrieving a message from the ----- server.

Ans..

Disagree, definition is correct but given example is wrong.

New Definition: Post Office Protocol (POP) is a type of computer networking and Internet standard protocol that extracts and retrieves email from a remote mail server for access by the host machine.

Ex: You download mail application in your android phone. That recieves messages using POP protocol in your device.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMAP: Internet Message Access Protocol allows the web browser to read messages on the mail server. IMAP allows users to store their email on remote servers.

Ans...

Disagree with the second statement.

New Definition with explanation:

IMAP allows us to access our email messages wherever we are, most of the time it is accessed via the Internet. Basically, email messages are stored on servers. Whenever we check our inbox, our email client contacts the server to connect us with our messages. When we read an email message using IMAP, we aren't actually downloading or storing it on our computer, instead, we are reading it off of the server. As a result, it's possible to check our email from several different devices without missing a thing.
