600 words

There is a great deal of emphasis on the right to free speech, but very little is ever said about the consequences... you have the right to yell "fire", but you must accept that doing so may put others in peril, and so you can be fined or imprisoned as a result. We never focus on that, though, because we get caught up in making sure OUR points get out, even if it means shouting down others, deleting their rhetoric, or even having them banned from areas where their views can be heard. In the free market of ideas, however, it can't be "all about me", or we lose out on the greatness that can come from sharing philosophies, new innovations, and experiences. Consider an area of communication/speech that you find controversial, and think about how it should be limited, or how it should be protected. Use that as a basis for this weeks discussion. Consider the exercises on p172-174 if you need some guidance. And, as always, avoid a topic that has already been brought up. This week, though, avoid any obvious extremes --make this discussion challenge your mind!
