INCIDENT 1 WHAT A CHANGE!
"Just leave me alone and let me do my job," said Manuel Gomez. Dumbfounded, Bill Brown, Manuel's supervisor, decided to count to 10 and did not respond to Manuel's comment. As he walked back to is office, Bill thought about how Manuel had changed over the past few months. He had been a hard worker and extremely cooperative when he started working for Bill two years before. The company had sent Manuel two training schools and had received glowing reports about his performance in each of them.
Until about a year ago, Manuel had a perfect attendance record and was an ideal employee. At about that ime, however, he began to have personal problems, which resulted in divorce six months later. Manuel had several times request a day off to take care of personal business. Bill attempted to help in every way he could without getting directly involved in Manuel's personal affairs. But Bill was aware of the strain Manuel must have experienced as his mariage broke up, and he and his wife engaged in the inevitable dispute over child custody, alimony payments, and property.
During tha same time period, to management initiated a push for improving prodctivity. Bill found it necessary to put additional pressure on all his workers, including Manuel. He tried to be considerate, but he had to become much more performance-oriented, insisting on increased output from every worker. As time went on, Manuel began to show up late for work, and actually missed two days without calling Bill in advance. Bill attributed Manuel's behavior to extreme stress. Because Manuel had been such a good worker for so long, Bill excused the tardiness and absences, only gently suggesting that Manuel should try ot do better.
Sitting at his desk, Bill thought about what might have caused Maunel's outburst a few minutes previously. Bill had suggested to Manuel tha the shut down the machine he was operating and clean u the surronding area. This was a normal part of Mnauel's job and somethng he had been careful to do in the past. Bill felt the disorder around Manuel's machine might account for the increasing number of defects in the parts he was making. "This is a tough one. I think I'll talk to the boss about it," thought Bill.
Explanation / Answer
Following are the problems that could be identified with Manuel from the above case:
· Manuel, who has otherwise been a hard worker and also a qualified employee of the Organization, has of late, started exhibiting such unprofessional behavior to his Superior, Bill that has now become a serious issue for the Organization to look into.
· The reason behind such a behavior is extreme level of stress that Manuel is primarily facing in his personal life that has resulted into a recent divorce followed by the disputes related to the child custody, alimony, the running of personal business, etc.
· Owing to such a intolerable behavior at office such as not informing the Superior before taking back-to-back two days leave or coming late to office, etc., there has been an impact on his performance at work place also resulting to increase in number of defects in the parts that he was making.
Following are some possibilities that Bill could possibly do:
· Try discussing with Manuel if in some manner Manuel could open and speak his heart out either to him or to the Human Resource team or to both.
· Report to the Boss about Manuel’s change in behavior and attitude to work and if it is feasible to consult him to a Psychiatrist for otherwise Manuel is a very promising employee and an asset to the Organization.
· Engage Manuel to such activities that have more of a recreation involved in it because that shall help him divert his mind from the Personal tensions considerably and subsequently, he could be migrated to his key-role areas.
· Impart training and guidance to him with a professional involved in the picture to work it out with the problems.
· Celebrate some special occasions of the workplace making him as the center point for communication and arrangements that would help him realize that there is another family at the workplace who care for him and consider him as one of their family member at the Office front.
