1. Install vmplayer
      a) Use the following link to download VMplayer:

Activity 1 Description

In Part 2 of the textbook Operating Systems, readChapter 8 and complete the lab projects at the end of thechapter.

The problems are defined in the lab project manual.

Procedure/Steps

Note: Maintain a point-form journal of all actions you takewhile completing the lab, describing each step in your own words.Include any notes of steps or components within the labs that youare unsure of or that you feel require clarification.

The overall goal of a point-form journal is to create notes thataccurately describe actions you perform. These notes can be usedfor troubleshooting problems or for when you are repeating asimilar task. The notes should appear in sequential order and be inan organized format which allows you to easily access theinformation.

Step 1: Create a Linux-based tree structure.

Step 2: Review the basic Linux commands used to create a treestructure.

Step 3: Reinforce your understanding of the Linux-based treestructure.

Step 4: Distinguish between navigating to a parent, child, andsibling directories in Linux.

Step 5: Utilize the Linux (vi) editor to append, insert, yank,put, and delete text in a file.

Step 6: Create files and directories, identifying the columns ofthe output of the Is –I command.

Step 7: Utilize the sort command to sort data.

Step 8: Utilize the cut and diff commands to manipulate text ina file.

Step 9: Utilize the grep command to search for data within afile and use the find command to search for file names inLinux.

Step 10: Utilize the redirection and pipe symbols in Linux.

Step 11: Utilize the Linux Wildcard symbols.

Step 12: Practice utilizing the sort, grep, and awkcommands.

Outcome

Utilize and work with the Linux operating system.

Explanation / Answer

If you are on dial-up, it will take a long time to load thesefiles, dial-up not recommended. 1st download the vmplayer and install, 2nd download the fedorafile. If you click on the VM, that is saved to your desktop, in thecenter of it after opening is a file that will run the Linuxprogram. When it opens it will give you the instructions of how to set up a user name and password. To get to the command prompselect applications, accessories, then terminal, and from there youwould complete the lab.
