Question
Moe Electronics produces APP switches for NASA. The current assembly capacity is 100 switches per hour. It takes 40 minutes to receive the necessary components from the previous workstation. Completed switches are placed in a rack that will hold 25 switches. The rack must be full before it is sent on to the next workstation. If Moe uses a safety factor of 5 percent, how many kanbans are needed for the APP switch assembly process?
Please describe each step and the calculations needed to complete this problem.
Please show all calculations before rounding,
Explanation / Answer
When a Rack full of completed switches moves to next station , it triggers movement of next rack . This process will continue perpetually.
Thus there should be enough Kanban which should take care of in process inventory which would act as buffer between the filled up rack which is moving out and incoming components.
The in process Inventory in form of Kanbans will take care of :
Thus total time : 40 + 15 = 55 minutes
Considering safety factor of 5 percent , total time for which Kanbans are needed
= 55 x 1.05 minutes
= 57.75 minutes
Total time of 57.75 minutes will be equivalent to =( 57.75/60 )x 100 switches ( since assembly capacity 100 switches per hour)
Since capacity of 1 Kanban rack = 25 switches
Number of Kanbans which will be required
= ( 57.75/ 60) x (100 / 25)
= 3.85 ( 4 rounded to next higher whole number )
Therefore , a total of 4 Kanbans will be required
NUMBER OF KANBANS REQUIRED FOR APP SWITCH ASSEMBLY PROCESS = 4
NUMBER OF KANBANS REQUIRED FOR APP SWITCH ASSEMBLY PROCESS = 4
