Explanation / Answer
Hi,
Please note that I am retired recently, and will answer them based on my last job that I handled for 14 years in a senior managerial position.
When you mention two paragraphs, it means that you don’t want answers separately for each question, but answered as a whole covering all the questions you have asked, right? Based on that I am giving my answer. If you need answers individually, let me know.
I work in the Entertainment Industry, in a company that provides technical solutions to the Entertainment Industry. When I say solutions, it covers products like Video Editing products, Digital Audio workstations, Digital Cinema, Digital Theatre Sound etc and it is normally turnkey projects and that is why I have mentioned it as solutions. Entertainment Industry works differently to other industries. It is laid back, with late start to the day, casual dressing the norm and creativity is what is sought after. However, it requires ever changing technology to bring out more and more creative entertainment ideas. So working in such an Industry is very interesting. And the company I work in follows this norm, and has a very young top management, which makes it all the more interesting. Talking to the Directors, CEO etc is without any prior appointments. We all follow the same principles. We are always open to meeting our subordinates, be it a manager or an engineer or the office boy. I head the Technical Support Division of the company, looking after the After Sales Service and Support of all of our products. I am also responsible for all training in the company. I have around 350 members in my team, with around 4 Senior Managers, 7 Managers and around 350 engineers. A typical day of mine would consist of meeting the Senior Managers and Managers and discussing with them the previous days work, issues faced etc and what needs to be done. When needed, I would meet with the CEO, HR department, Finance dept etc for various reasons. Some days I would have to interview prospective engineers to fill some vacancies. Also I have to conduct training for new hires, manage the call centre, liaise with the Software department regarding issues faced in the field with the products.
Communication apart from direct face to face communication is mostly done by e-mails as it helps in sending messages to groups and serves as a record for the recipient to refer to when required. This is very effective and efficient as my team is fairly widespread across the country. Being an understanding leader and open to communication and willing to accept others ideas is what works in this organization. Employees are motivated through various means. Being recognized on their achievements, especially in the quarterly appraisal motivates them. Prospects of promotion, recognition in Townhall meetings etc are other motivational factors. Providing a sympathetic ear to their problems also increases the morale. Most of the work is assigned through Key Perfromance Areas (KPA’s) and Indicators (KPI’s). Immediate tasks are assigned based on the availability, location of the employee etc. The engineers get their tasks assigned by the managers, who in turn get it from the Senior managers who in turn get it from me. As mentioned performance appraisals are used, whereby the employee gets to do a self appraisal, and then managers see if it matches with actual results. Any differences are discussed between superior and subordinate and subordinate is given the chance to substantiate his claim. Usually, one of the sides is able to convince the other on each performance indicator. Employees contributions are valued very much and usually rewarded with Variable pay and other recognitions. Employees who have problems come in depressed or angry. I usually talk to them and discuss their problem even if it is personal, and if a solution can be offered, I try to help. Sometimes it may need the HR dept to intervene and help them. I always say that a person will be good in something or the other. So when I have a non performing worker, I try to put them in different situations to see where they are able to perform. Based on that I shift them. And I have seen most of them respond well to this challenge and show their capabilities. As a rule, the company does not allow relatives to be employed. However, the exception is towards relatives of the lowest paid employees or employees who have passed away. Only in such circumstances do we allow relatives to join.
