1. Discuss the theories of Peter F. Drucker:
a. What are Drucker’s main contributions to the field of management?
b. How do his ideas differ from the views of Frederick Winslow Taylor?
c. Which of these 2 influential management thinkers do you believe has the most applicable message for us today?
Explanation / Answer
Ethics and Morals should be on top most elements for any management and organization to run. Drucker’s main theories and contributions to the field of management were as follows-
1-Decentralization
Drucker believes in decentralization of management which means that no single manager would get the whole control over the organization as he saw that many leaders try to take on everything in a demonstration of power to gather full control because they thing that only they can accomplish a task correctly. Drucker believed that managers should delegate tasks in order to empower employees.
2-Management by Objectives- This particular phrase was coined by Peter Drucker in his book "The Practice of Management," published in 1954. Performance is the most important aspect and MBO measures the performance of employees as compared to typical standards for the job. The belief is that, if employees help determine those standards, they will be more likely to fulfill them.
3-SMART Method- It means specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-related. Drucker's SMART Method is a way of checking objectives to make sure an objective is valid. Any project must be specific and measurable with achievable targets and also it should be realistic and not out f control. Also it should be bound to be completed in a certain given time frame.
4- Knowledge worker- It is associated with the belief of equality. It is one of the many terms coined by Drucker within his management theories. By the measure of today's society, a knowledge worker is equivalent to the executive of a company.
But his views were quiet different from those of Frederick Winslow Taylor. Taylor believes in a scientific approach to the management.
