Question

1. Frank’s BarBeQue just missed being impacted by a tornado that ripped through southwestern Connecticut. Many small businesses were lost, never to reopen, while others sustained major physical and economic damage. Frank’s son, Robert, asked his father about whether he was prepared for something like that. Frank’s response was troubling. Although he kept some important documents in a safety deposit box at the bank, there was little planning or protection. Robert explained the importance of disaster planning, but Frank was overwhelmed by the prospect of the process. Robert contacted a local university and arranged with its school of business for a team of five students to prepare a disaster plan for Frank’s BarBeQue. He presented the project idea to his father and was relieved that his dad was willing to participate. It was clearly understood that no proprietary or confidential information would be shared with the students. Assume that you are the leader of the team. Describe the approach you will take and the recommendations that you will make. It is expected that you will go beyond the information provided in the text. Creativity is strongly encouraged.

2. As part of the disaster management plan, Robert has asked the student team to prepare a specific plan for obtaining disaster assistance under the assumption that both physical and economic damages will occur. Review the various options and the material from the textbook and then make specific recommendations. It is expected that you will go beyond the information presented in the text.

Explanation / Answer

In such a scenario, insurance coverage is a must for people and for the property. Following steps should be taken well before any disaster.

CPR Class and Fire Training- This should be on top most priority as a life can be saved under such circumstances where any tornado hits again at barbeque or surroundings. A well trained person can make a difference for some ones life. A training from nearby fire department is a must with knoledge of class of extinguishers.

Emergency supplies- You don't know for how long you may be cut off for rest of the world. So itz better to be well prepared and have a stock of food and water for 4-6 weeks with medical kit too.

Safe passage- One should know and well aware of escape routes from home. Find two ways out of each room to outside and good knowledge of nearby police, hospital etc.

Fix a place- Pick minimum two places to meet your family. Right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency, like a fire and Outside your neighborhood in case you can't return home. Everyone must know the address and phone number.

Mock drill- Better preparation includes regular participation in mock drills carried by safety departments or by red cross societies. A small drill can be practiced by your family as well.

Plant Trees- Trees nearby can protect you but it can be dangerous too. It is a 50-50 situation so better to have trees then none.

Safety of documents- All property related documents should be kept in a locker in a bank but who knows that bank can also be damaged. So a soft copy in your email and in any cloud account should be kept which will be safe.
