Jane Peters was having the best morning of her careet. Since coming to United Concepts ss vas Advertising as an account executive, she had been successful in acquiring new business, but nothing as big as the Raven Furniture account. Raven was the largest chain of furniture stores in the West, and landing the account meant something not only in the West Coast offices of from s United Concepts but in Chicago and New York as well. Jane knew that her creative team, John and Chris, was largely responsible. The close- /A working relationship among the three was the best Jane had experienced in her fifteen years in the advertising industry. In fact, Jane began to think of ways to make John and Chris more visible to her boss, Frank Donnell. After all, Frank was pleased that the agency got the Raven account. Perhaps he could be persuaded to promote John and Chris to senior creative Three Weeks Later Jane was exhausted. Getting the Raven account up and going was not only requiring long hours but was also complicated by the resistance of some of the top management at Raven. She had never imagined there would be resistance at Raven to changing agencies and considerable disagreement about the United Concepts proposal. In fact, dealing with the various people at Raven was taking too much time. Her other accounts were not getting the service they needed, and Chris had just made a major error in the Raven ad scheduled to run this weekend. Jane caught the mistake as it was about to go to the printer. Although it was costly to adjust the error at that point, she was relieved but shaken at how close they had come to a major problem. Jane considered approaching Frank Donnell for more help on the account.Explanation / Answer
1. As Jane has been closely working with Chris and John, so definitely she has been affected by Frank's decision of not promoting Chris and John. My suggestion for Jane in this situation would be to think logically rather than rushing into emotional decisions and sending out an email in anger, as this might affect her career as well as all the efforts that she has put in for the Raven's Account. In this situation, Jane should first of all thank Frank for honouring her request for an additional resource, at the same time she should highlight all the efforts and good work done by Chris and John. She should convince Frank that even though new senior positions cannot be created in the West coast office as per organizational rule, perhaps both Chris and John deserve a recognition from the company side and should be enlisted for a raise in their current remuneration.
2. Jane would take the case of Chris and John logically and should handle them diplomatically as they feel that their hard work will go in vain. They have worked a lot on Raven's account which was a big project for United concepts advertising group. As Chris was about to make a big mistake which just narrowly escaped, so Jane would suggest both of them to take calm decisions ad work properly without making any mistake. Although Jane's proposal for promotion failed Jane can motivate them by providing recognition in front of others.
3. Jane should provide all the information regarding Chris, John and their efforts, and details about the Raven account to Frank Donnell. It is Jane's responsibility to convince Frank for giving a promotion or if a promotion is not possible as they cannot create new positions, rewards should be given or may be bonus could be given for the dedicated and committed work. Also, Jane should emphasis on the motivational factors by which employees will stay motivated which will increase their productivity leading to organizational revenue generation.
4. There was a communication gap between Jane and Chris and john because Jane got some personal problems and could not give time to them. There was lack of information transfer from Jane and her team to Frank on what they were doing for Raven's account. There were major mistakes in the work which was caught at the last moment or it could have hampered their relationship with Raven. Without giving enough time for the project they were rushing which can hamper the productivity.
5. Recommendations for fixing the issues are first proper communication within the group is necessary, appropriate motivation is required from top management to carry on with the work may be monetary or non-monetary incentives, proper workforce planning would result in better work as there was manpower shortage. Before delivery of the project, Jane should have thoroughly gone through it to avoid mistakes.
