Question

1. What type of network is the Networking Lab (P2P? Client/Server?) Explain how you know this and what benefit this type of network provides.
2. Perform a Windows/Microsoft update on your system, only choose a few packages to install.

What does Windows update provide for on your system? Is it necessary to install every package provided by Microsoft in Windows update? Why might we not install one of the packages?

3. Suspend the virtual machine and logoff host OS

Explain the four things, talked about in class, that need to be present in order for computers to communicate.

Explanation / Answer

1. Client/Server Peer-to-peer networks are typically less secure than a client-server networks because security is handled by the individual computers, not controlled and supervised on the network as a whole. The resources of the computers in the network can become congested as they have to support not only the workstation user, but also the requests from network users. It may be difficult to provide systemwide services when the client operating system typically used in this type of network is incapable of hosting the service. In the peer to peer network, software applications can be installed on the single computer and shared by every computer in the network. They are also cheaper to set up because most desktop operating systems have the software required for the network installed by default. On the other hand, the client-server model works with any size or physical layout of LAN and doesn't tend to slow down with a heavy use. 2. Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft that provides updates for the Microsoft Windows operating system and its installed components, including Internet Explorer. There are different kinds of updates. Security updates or critical updates protect against vulnerabilities to malware and security exploits. Other updates correct errors that aren't related to security, or enhance functionality. We need not install all the packages rovided by Microsoft in Windows update - we need to install the security updates, but we can choose not to install the packages related to enhancing functionality, if we do not need the enhanced functionality.
