Question

You have been working for the XYZ Computer Corporation as an entry-level software engineering since you graduated from college last May. You have done very well so far; you are respected by management, well liked by your fellow employees , and have been assigned to a team of engineers that has consistently worked on the most critical and valued projects and contracts that XYZ Corp. has secured. Their most recent contract is for a U.S. defense project involving the Missile Defense System, and again, you have been assigned to the team that will develop software for this project. However, you are staunchly opposed to the project

Explanation / Answer

legal and ethical issues in computing. hated that course :) The objective is to create a Missle Defense System, not kill thousands of people. Yes, this system would have the potential to do so. However, this system could save thousands of people as well. As a software engineer there will be many times in your life that you disagree with the assignment or objective. However, you do not always have an option. Especially when you have responsibilities such as a family and home. Here are the options as I see them: 1. Stand your ground, take the pay cut, and get off the team 2. Stay on the team, complete the project, and move on 3. Stay on/ or leave project, while looking for another job Each has their own consequences. Your peers might be more dissapointed that such a good developer does not want to stay on the team. As a solid contributor your team would rely on your expertise. I believe that your team would ultimately forgive and respect you for your decision.
